A hands-on engineering career with opportunities to learn and develop
Sharkey Lifting Limited is looking for a motivated, practical and enthusiastic individual to join our growing engineering team.
We specialise in lifting equipment, lifting point installations, testing and inspections, supporting customers across the construction, elevator and engineering industries.
This is a varied, hands-on role involving daily site visits, installation and testing work, thorough examinations of lifting equipment and, where required, workshop-based inspections and repairs.
We are interested in hearing from experienced lifting equipment engineers and technicians, as well as candidates with a strong practical background, an interest in engineering and the drive to learn new skills.
The right attitude, attention to detail and a willingness to take responsibility are just as important as previous industry experience.
The Role
Working as part of our engineering team, you will attend a variety of customer sites to carry out installations, testing and inspections of lifting equipment and associated systems.
The role will suit someone who enjoys practical problem-solving, working with tools and equipment, and taking pride in completing work safely and to a high standard.
You will be expected to work independently when competent to do so, while also working closely with colleagues and communicating effectively with customers and management.
As your experience develops, there will be opportunities to expand your technical knowledge and become involved in a wider range of engineering, inspection, testing and repair activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend construction sites, elevator installation projects and other customer locations to carry out scheduled engineering work.
- Install and test lifting points, lifting beams and associated equipment.
- Install safety edge protection systems and other related safety equipment.
- Carry out thorough examinations and inspections of lifting gear and lifting equipment in accordance with applicable requirements, procedures and instructions.
- Complete inspection reports, test documentation and other technical records accurately and promptly.
- Identify defects, damage, wear or other issues and report findings clearly.
- Assist with the inspection, servicing, fault-finding and repair of lifting equipment, including electro-mechanical equipment where appropriate.
- Carry out workshop-based inspections, testing and repairs as required.
- Communicate professionally with customers, site personnel, colleagues and management.
- Take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of your work, following established procedures and safety requirements.
- Use company systems and technology to record work, complete reports and improve the efficiency of inspections and examinations.
- Contribute ideas for improving working methods, inspection processes and service delivery.
- Maintain tools, equipment and vehicles in good order and represent Sharkey Lifting professionally on customer sites.
Who We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone with a practical, hands-on approach to engineering who enjoys learning how equipment works and finding solutions to technical problems.
You may already have experience in lifting equipment, mechanical engineering, maintenance, installation or inspection. Alternatively, you may have a general engineering or construction background and be looking for an opportunity to develop specialist technical skills.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- A genuine interest in engineering and working with mechanical equipment.
- A practical aptitude and confidence using tools and equipment.
- Good attention to detail and a strong sense of responsibility.
- An understanding of the importance of working safely and following procedures.
- The ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with colleagues and customers.
- The confidence to work independently when competent, together with the good judgement to ask questions or seek guidance when unsure.
- A willingness to learn, accept feedback and develop new skills.
- An open-minded attitude towards new technology, digital reporting systems and improved working methods.
- A reliable, professional and positive approach to work.
Experience and Qualifications
Previous experience is desirable but is not essential for the right candidate.
The following would be a significant advantage:
- Experience in lifting equipment, lifting accessories or lifting point installations.
- Experience carrying out inspections, thorough examinations or load testing.
- A mechanical engineering, maintenance or electro-mechanical background.
- Experience diagnosing faults, repairing equipment or carrying out workshop testing.
- Previous experience working on construction sites or in other active site environments.
- Relevant technical qualifications or training.
- A current Safe Pass card and other relevant site safety training.
- A full, clean driving licence.
Candidates with relevant industry experience may be able to take on greater responsibility from the outset. For less experienced candidates, training and development will be an important part of the role, with responsibilities increasing as competence is demonstrated.
Training and Development
Lifting equipment inspection and testing is a specialist area, and we recognise that the right person may not have all the necessary experience when joining us.
We are keen to invest in someone who demonstrates enthusiasm, practical ability, attention to detail and a genuine willingness to learn.
You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of lifting equipment, installation methods, testing procedures, inspection requirements and technical reporting.
For someone with ambition and the right attitude, this role offers the opportunity to develop into a skilled and trusted member of our engineering team.
Why Join Sharkey Lifting?
